The Reliance, Royal Navy ship (1793-1815)

Reconstruction based on known sources; no contemporary depiction of this vessel survives.

HMS Reliance was a three-masted ship of 394 tons, built as a merchantman at South Shields on the Tyne and bought by the Royal Navy in December 1793. Rated a “discovery vessel”, she served chiefly as an armed transport for the young colony of New South Wales.

On 20 January 1795 she was at Plymouth, and so shared in the proceeds of the Dutch vessels detained in port on the outbreak of war between Britain and the Netherlands. Under the command of Henry Waterhouse she then sailed for Port Jackson with the new governor John Hunter, the surgeon George Bass, the midshipman Matthew Flinders and Bennelong, returning from England. She reached Sydney on 7 September 1795. In her hold Bass had stowed a little eight-foot boat, the Tom Thumb.

The ship then sailed to the Cape of Good Hope by way of Cape Horn, and returned to Sydney on 26 June 1797 with stores ordered by Hunter. Waterhouse and Lieutenant William Kent, the governor's nephew, had bought twenty-six merino sheep there from the widow of Colonel Gordon; more than half survived a hard passage. They were the colony's first merinos: Waterhouse supplied lambs to John Macarthur and Samuel Marsden.

Trim, the cat who would follow Flinders on all his voyages, was born on board the Reliance in 1799. The worn-out ship was patched up and left Port Jackson on 3 March 1800 for England, carrying Flinders home. On the way, in March 1800, she was the first ship to chart the Antipodes Islands.

Relegated to harbour service that same year, the Reliance survived another fifteen years before being sold on 12 October 1815.
